Bush Subpoenas Michael Moore

Poponthepop got the scoop on Friday that Michael Moore received a subpoena from the Bush administration for traveling to Cuba during the filming of his movie Sicko. Part of the film depicts Moore taking some of the 9/11 rescue workers to Cuba to attempt to get free health care for them at Guantanamo Bay. When they can't get into the military base, Moore decides to go to Havana instead.

Americans are prohibited from traveling to Cuba as part of the 45 year old embargo against the country. Americans travel to Cuba all the time by going through a third country, such as Canada or Mexico, and asking that their passport doesn't get stamped. However, it's kind of hard for Moore to claim he never went to Cuba when movie theaters across the country can prove otherwise. I hope that unlike some people (*cough* George Bush), Michael Moore will honor the subpoena and use the opportunity of testifying before Congress to call the government and the health care industry to task. Something about Moore's appearance on Jay Leno last week tells me he will.

While Moore was on Jay Leno last week when he also announced his idea to get insurance companies to pay your medical bills. If you've been denied coverage, just tell them Moore is making a sequel to Sicko and that they could be on film. Check out the video!

If you saw the movie and you're outraged but you don't know what to do about it, read up on H.R. 676, the National Health Insurance Act and consider writing to your representatives in Congress. If you're a resident of California, read up on State Senator Sheila Kuehl's bill SB840, the California Universal Health Care Bill.
