Many of us are already familiar with the annual breast cancer walks that occur in cities all across the US every year. But did you know about the latest trend: 3-day treks to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation?According to the SGK website, the 3-day, 60-mile journey may seem daunting on paper, but "the route is lined with support and safety nets galore: food, drink, friends, volunteers, medical services, port-a-potties. And the camp at the end of the day’s route, with showers, delicious hot dinners, even entertainment." Money raised from the walk goes towards breast cancer research and prevention outreach.
I am considering registering for the walk in Arizona because I have multiple wimmin in my life who have been effected by breast cancer. I'm not the only one. This year, more than 200,000 women and men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 will lose their lives to the disease. A woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 3 minutes. Every 13 minutes, the disease claims another life.
However, as an animal rights supporter, I have wrestled with the decision to participate because I know that some of the money raised by SGK does go towards vivisection research. I plan to do some asking around to find out if I can specify that the money I collect will only go towards prevention outreach. But regardless, I guess I better lace up my walking shoes. What a perfect excuse to go back to the Footlocker for those sexy pink Nikes I saw last week!
