I almost peed my pants last night when I saw a commercial for organic pajamas, just one component of Wal-Mart’s new “green” campaign. Do they actually think they’re going to woo progressive shoppers with this new campaign?
Wal-Mart says it will invest $500 million in sustainability projects, and the company has done a lot more than draw up targets. It has quickly become, for instance, the biggest seller of organic milk and the biggest buyer of organic cotton in the world. It is working with suppliers to figure out ways to cut down on packaging and energy costs. It has opened two "green" supercenters.
For this $312 billion dollar company, that’s truly a drop in the bucket. And I don’t think any of us have forgotten Wal-mart’s history of gender discrimination and union-busting activities. I don’t care how many pairs of organic pajamas they try to sell me or how many screenings of “An Inconvenient Truth” they host, there's no way I’m shopping at Wal-Mart.

It's awesome to hear that Wal-Mart is going green!
Even if it is just 2 centers, it's a start.
Lord knows the entire world shops there. So if Wal-Mart can set the tone, many other retailers may feel pressured to follow their lead.
Joy, you're right, Wal-Mart is a behemouth and certainly sets industry trends. Unfortunately, I think that this is just a PR campaign to cover up their terrible labor standards. -Freewomyn
