According to The Independent, British scientists are one step closer to making female-only conception a possibility. Researchers have already been able to take the bone marrow cells from men and turn them into sperm cells. If the study can be replicated on females, this could give lesbian couples the ability to biologically conceive their own daughters.
Creating sperm from women would mean they would only be able to produce daughters because the Y chromosome of male sperm would still be needed to produce sons. The latest research brings the prospect of female-only conception a step closer.
"Theoretically is it possible," Professor Karim Nayernia said. "The problem is whether the sperm cells are functional or not. I don't think there is an ethical barrier, so long as it's safe. We are in the process of applying for ethical approval.”
Those of us who were forced to read Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Herland as undergrads will remember the all-female utopia she envisioned. For my part, I would have liked a few more lesbian bars in this all-woman paradise. At least with scientific advancements, lesbians/feminists can knock boots instead of reproducing asexually.
